Trump Allows Medicaid Work Reporting Requirements
Advocates Call Policy “Cruel, Illegal, and Counter-Productive”
“Does Trump Comply with His Own Work Requirements?”
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, among adults who receive Medicaid, nearly 8 in 10 live in working families, and a majority are working themselves. Of those who are not currently working, most have an illness or disability or are caring for a family member. Yet, the Trump Administration just issued guidelines which will, for the first time in the more than 50 year history of the program, require that people who receive Medicaid report that they are either working or preparing for work in order to continue receiving health care. President Trump’s Fiscal Year 2018 budget also proposed work requirements for public housing residents.
In response, Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, issues this statement:
“The new policy is cruel, illegal, and counter-productive. It is simply heartless to take away health care from those who need it most. It is counter-productive because it will expand bureaucracy and harm the nation’s health, but not increase employment. The policy does not provide a penny more for job training, placement, or creation. The new work reporting requirement will literally force workers to leave work – and force job seekers to stop their job hunts – to take time off to travel to a government office to report their work activities. Taking away health care from those seeking work will only make them less healthy, and thereby less likely to obtain employment. This is literally a lose-lose-lose policy.
I must note that President Trump is living in public housing and receiving government-funded health care, yet media reports indicate he may only work in his office a few hours per day. It is more than fair to ask if he meets his own administration’s work requirements.”
