Summer Meals Distribution at Port Huron's Blue Water Fest Family Night

Port Huron Area School District, a sponsor of the federally-funded Summer Food Service Program, and Hunger Free America, a national direct service and advocacy nonprofit organization, will be promoting and distributing free meals for children at the Blue Water Fest OT Family Night Thursday evening, July 18, 2019. Volunteers and anti-hunger advocates including Hunger Free America CEO Joel Berg will be handing out flyers to promote the Summer Food Service Program, which provides free meals to kids 18 and under during the summer months. The Port Huron Area School District’s Meet Up and Eat Up initiative will then be distributing free suppers for children in attendance. The Port Huron Area School District is expecting 1,000 children to attend. The Meet Up and Eat Up booth will be set up amid all the other family-friendly activities at the OT Family Night including a petting zoo, pony rides, balloon animals, a Lego Table, and PAWS — the Detroit Tigers mascot.

The Summer Food Service Program is extremely underutilized across the country including in the state of Michigan, where only 12.5% of eligible children received Summer Meals in July 2018, placing Michigan in the 31st position out of all states in Summer Meals performance. These numbers are according to the Food Research & Action Center’s new Summer Nutrition Status Report, which also shows that 456,881 low-income children who received school meals during the 2017-2018 school year did not get Summer Meals in 2018. The report shows that if the percentage of students participating in Summer Meals increased to 40%, the State of Michigan would receive an additional $11,628,548 in federal reimbursements. Given that there were 341,297 children, or 15.9% of all Michigan children, living in food insecure homes from 2015-2017, according to Hunger Free America’s 2018 U.S. Hunger Atlas, it is essential to increase awareness of and participation in the Summer Food Service Program so that children receive nutritious food while school is out of session.
