Hunger Free NYC Bilingual (Spanish, Bengali, or Chinese – Mandarin & Cantonese) Benefits Specialist

*This is a full-time position, expected to last approximately 3-4 months with a strong possibility of becoming permanent.  All work will be conducted from the employee’s home, at least until our home office, satellite offices in the Bronx and Queens, or community-based host sites can safely re-open.  The needed technology & equipment will be provided.

Hunger Free New York City (HFNYC), a division of Hunger Free America, strives to build a nonpartisan, grassroots movement to enact the policies and programs needed to end hunger in New York City and ensure that all New Yorkers have sufficient access to nutritious food.

A significant aspect of HFNYC’s work is to connect eligible residents to SNAP / food stamp benefits and to assist them during the application process. The receipt of SNAP for those eligible individuals and families contributes to improved nutrition and reduces the financial strain of trying to pay for other household expenses on a limited budget.  During the current COVID-19 crisis, there has been a tremendous surge in the number of people applying for SNAP benefits and also in need of other types of food assistance, and we have received new funding to help meet this surge in demand.

Job Description:

The Benefits Specialist will at first work remotely to provide SNAP eligibility screenings and application assistance. Once it is safe and advisable, the Specialist will be primarily working from one of our satellite offices in either the Bronx or in Queens, or from local Community Based Organizations. The Specialist will also work to connect clients with other nutrition programs such as Pandemic-EBT (for families with school-aged children), home meal delivery, and referrals to food pantries and soup kitchens. All work must be entered into a database in order to track client progress.

The Specialist will conduct follow-up to ensure that applicants receive the correct amount of monthly benefits in a timely manner, and help to resolve cases in which this has not occurred.

HFNYC is an equal opportunity employer. People of all races, sexual orientations, ages, faiths, economic and social backgrounds, genders, physical abilities, and national origins are strongly encouraged to apply.

*ONLY BILINGUAL CANDIDATES (Spanish, Bengali, or Chinese –  both Mandarin & Cantonese) will be considered for this position.

Experience in: anti-hunger/nutrition; benefits screening (esp. for SNAP); working in low-income communities.  High-energy self-starter with strong communications, problem solving, organizing, and inter-personal skills, and a demonstrated commitment to fighting poverty and hunger.  Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is preferred, although people with significant, relevant, work experience will be considered.
