Anti-Hunger Advocates Congratulate Biden and Harris on Victory;
Look Forward to Working with Them to End Domestic Hunger
Call on G.O.P. to Restore Bi-Partisan Support for Fighting Hunger
In response to the election of Joe Biden as President and Kamala Harris as Vice President, Joel Berg, the CEO of Hunger Free America, a nonpartisan advocacy and direct service organization, issued the following statement:
Hunger Free America warmly congratulates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their victory. Both have long histories of fighting for economic and food justice, and both have spoken out passionately on the urgent need to end domestic hunger for the 54 million Americans now suffering from it. We look forward to working collaboratively with them and their teams to end U.S. hunger as a critical component of their overall plan to heal America and build back the country better. Given that hunger worsens the spread of COVID-19, drags down our economy, and violates every ethical and religious tradition, ending hunger would lift us all. We note that, in the 1970s, there was strong bipartisan support for fighting hunger, with key Republican leaders such as Richard Nixon and Robert Dole playing critical roles in dramatically increasing funding for the federal assistance safety net. I hope the G.O.P. reverts to that common sense, compassionate support for making sure the “least of these” are fed. But no matter what, the nation’s leadership should aggressively and rapidly implement a serious anti-hunger and economic opportunity agenda.
