Advocates Call on Presidential Candidates to Renounce House G.O.P. Effort to Increase Child Hunger and Obesity
“Sensible Leaders of Both Parties Must Reject Inane Bill”
As presidential candidates gear up for the primary vote in Pennsylvania next week, the House G.O.P. Agriculture Committee releases a proposed Child Nutrition Reauthorization Bill that would make it more difficult for hungry children to obtain school meals. It would also increase bureaucracy and paperwork for local school districts, and roll back nutritional improvement in school meals: Improving Child Nutrition and Education Act of 2016 (H.R. 5003) (pdf).
In contrast, a bi-partisan child nutrition bill proposed by the Senate Agriculture Committee makes modest investments in improving access to child nutrition programs.
Said, Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, “All Presidential candidates, from both parties, should immediately denounce this inane, callous, and counterproductive bill. The futures of tens of millions of American kids are at stake. In the 1970’s, stalwart Republican leaders such as President Richard Nixon and Senator Robert Dole led efforts, along with key Democrats, to reduce child hunger and boost child nutrition. All candidates of all parties should re-commit to bi-partisan efforts to cut child hunger and give all our kids happier, healthier, lives.”
