OMB Director Mick Mulvaney Claims No Evidence

After-School Feeding Programs Work

Advocates Challenge Him to Meet with Children, Parents, and Teachers to See Programs Working

This afternoon, federal OMB Director Mick Mulvaney, participating in a White House Press Briefing, said, “Let’s talk about after school programs… They’re supposed to help kids who don’t get fed at home, get fed so they do better in school. Guess what? There’s no demonstrable evidence that they are actually doing that, there’s no demonstrable evidence that they are actually helping results, helping kids do better in school.”

In federal Fiscal Year 2016, the Child and Adult Care Food Program provided over 2 billion meals to low income children, teens, and disabled adults.  After school programs and after school feeding programs have also had countless documented success stories as indicated in this CDC report.  Over 13 million US children -- one in six -- currently living in homes unable to afford an adequate supply of food.”

Responded Joel Berg CEO of Hunger Free America: “It is ludicrous for anyone to say that after school programs, or the Child and Adult Care Food Program, are unsuccessful in their missions of feeding hungry kids, boosting education, and keeping children safe after school.  These programs are vital to the development of our country, and allow low-income parents some extra peace of mind for their children while they work 2-3 jobs to try and make ends meet. Mountains of data, which we’d be thrilled to share with the OMB director, prove the effectiveness of these programs. Moreover, the daily experiences of children, parents, and teachers nationwide prove the vitality of these efforts every day; we would respectfully challenge Director Mulvaney to join us in meeting with such program experts any time and place in the nation that is convenient for him.”
